Bodegas Luzón to market the Tomás Ferro wine produced in collaboration with the Polytechnic University of Cartagena
The wine has been granted varietal certification, confirming its quality
For the first time, Bodegas Luzón will market the limited edition of 5,000 bottles of the Tomás Ferro wine that it has been making in collaboration with the Agricultural Engineering degree programme at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena for the last four years.
The Managing Director of Bodegas Luzón, Francisco Javier Martinez, assures that “after four years of collaboration between the university and the winery we have achieved an honest wine that is full of youth”. In addition, this year, it has been granted the varietal certificate, confirming its quality and allowing the identification of the grape variety and vintage.
The Tomás Ferro wine, which also has a new label this year, is a young white wine made with the Merseguera variety, native to the Cartagena countryside. In terms of production, after the grapes have been harvested by hand by students and teachers, and left to rest for 24 hours in cold storage, they are then destemmed and crushed. After that, the must is left to macerate with the skins before being transferred to a steel tank, where it undergoes alcoholic fermentation and rests with its lees for a period of 3-4 months until it reaches the ideal point of consumption. Tomás Ferro presents notes of green apple, white fruit and grapefruit; it is very citric. On the palate it is unctuous and with a salinity typical of the landscape where the vineyards grow, which is almost at sea level.
Tomás Ferro combines the tradition of a variety adapted to the local soil and climate with the use of modern agronomic technologies, enhancing its quality and making it possible to save water during production.
The wine, which was presented today at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena’s School of Agronomists, was sponsored by Justo Nieto, Honorary Doctorate from the university and former Rector of the Polytechnic University of Valencia. The event was attended by Beatriz Miguel, Rector of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, Arantxa Aznar, Director of the School of Agronomists, Vicente Micó, Winemaker at Bodegas Luzón, and Francisco Javier Martinez, Managing Director of Bodegas Luzón.
